A Greener Future

Many students have passed on the important green messages to their family members. We believe that the impact of these messages will continue even after the Campaign has ended.

"Be a Green Child!"

The Hong Kong Jockey Club has spared no efforts in promoting environmental education. The aim of "The Hong Kong Jockey Club Green Child Campaign" was to enhance the environmental awareness amongst primary students. The Campaign was divided into two phases: the first phase was a "Use Fewer Plastic Bags" exercise; the second comprised a series of fun "Green Extra-Curricular Activities". Both phases worked to instil in the minds of young children an approach to everyday life that is environmental yet relatively effortless.

Phase I: Use Fewer Plastic Bags

The first phase commenced on 13 January and concluded on 10 March 2001. It received the support of 151 local primary schools and the participation of 100,000 students and also their families. Students were given two well-designed environmental bags, one for themselves and the other for their parents. In these two months, they were given receipts marked 'HKJC Green Child' every time they used no or fewer plastic bag upon shopping at the three retail partners of the Campaign: China Resources, Wellcome and ParkNshop. After returning these receipts to school, they would then be eligible to take part in the second phase of the Campaign. At the end of the first phase exercise, 100,000 participating students saved over one million plastic bags.

Phase II: Green Extra-curricular Activities

The second phase began in April and continued through to August 2001. The objective was to provide a series of fun and interesting green activities to participants of the first phase, in conjunction with other organisations. These activities included the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department's Earth Day Carnival, the Hong Kong Jockey Club's Environmental Week, the Ocean Park's Eco Tour, and the Greener and Cleaner Classrooms Project organised by Friends of the Earth.
